Beauty History

Why is fairness a measure of beauty in some cultures?
Currently being in Singapore with many races living under one roof, it confuses me why many girls are obsessed with being fair. What causes them to think that way? I mean, rationally thinking, if you take a really fair but mediocre-looking girl and put it next to a dark beauty, like Halle Berry or whoever is dark but beautiful, most would still go for the dark?
Is there a history in any culture that associates dark with being unpleasant in any way? I just think it’s almost stupid at times.
Because they know from watching their grandmothers, moles is something everyone is trying to avoid.
The more they are exposed to the sun, the darker & bigger they get. For many, people who are dark are the people who work outside a lot: farmers, construction workers, market vendors, drivers . . . and those who are fair are the princesses, queens and the lady of the house, who stay indoors. They are the rich folks who shouldn’t work, but look their best and entertain people.
My ancestors are the same thing. We cover ourselves from the heat and we remain cool. We work, go shopping but we carry with us umbrella and ride in tricycles or rickishaw (sp?) pedicabs or horse drawn carriage whatever we have to take us from point A to point B, so we hardly walk in the heat. It is a normal sight, not just for queens or princess, but many ladies who work in the office or walk 10 blocks to church we bring our umbrellas AND FOLDING FANS. We didn’t have AC, when I was a kid, we didn’t even have ice cubes! By 10AM it gets really hot, if you know what I mean, it’s like staying under a tree to keep cool & looking fresh.
As for me, I’ve discovered since I was 9, from eating raisins, they start out as grapes but dried from the sun, they become raisins. I certainly don’t want to get wrinkle fast like raisins by the time I’m 30.
1. Because I don’t want to look like a farmer.
2. Because I get too hot.
3. I want to look like movie stars & models, they have blemish-free skins, and I’ve admired them since I started going to the cinema.
4. I don’t want to look like an old prune or get moles on my neck & face like my aunts.
No matter, I still got Discoid Lupus (Google it), caused from the sun. It took 12 years for them to fade. Tried all kinds of lotions that were prescribed to me, and none of them worked. More & more now I protect myself and I take my wide brim hat everywhere I go, or use an umbrella. In Asia, they use umbrella all the time. Here in the States, people started to catch on, and I see people walking w/umbrella, they are used on the beach, and they sell patio umbrellas. It was invented for a reason and also to protect us from getting skin cancer.
The sun is more powerful than most people think!
If you travel elsewhere, there are places where many girls are obsessed in getting tan ‘the darker the better the more beautiful they are. Look at the reward they get in the end: skin cancer, turkey necks, moles, lots of freckles (Lindsay Lohan ex.) and as they get old, look how they suddenly cover their arms because of their discoloration from years of tanning called melanoma. If that’s what they call beautiful! IMO, I don’t think so.

Beauty $19.83 Beauty has emerged as one of the most hotly contested subjects in current discussions on art and culture. After more than half a century of suspicion and interrogation, beauty’s resurgence in visual practice and discourse since the late 1980s has engaged some of the most influential artists and writers on art. From the avant-garde to the conceptual era, anti-aesthetic strategies have resisted beauty because of its perceived complicity with dominant systems and ideologies. Thus politicized and opened to critique, beauty, invoked in relation to contemporary art, no longer sustains a singular or universal meaning but is always contentious. Spanning a range of positions on beauty–both for and against–this anthology assembles the key texts on the controversy and situates the debate over the revival of beauty in the broader context of the history of ideas and artistic practice. Artists surveyed: Vito Acconci, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Gustave Courbet, Marcel Duchamp, Marlene Dumas, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Gary Hume, Asger Jorn, Alex Katz, Willem de Kooning, Joseph Kosuth, Paul McCarthy, edouard Manet, Robert Mapplethorpe, Agnes Martin, Robert Morris, Barnett Newman, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Gerhard Richter, Mark Rothko, Robert Smithson, Nancy Spero, Frank Stella, Clyfford Still, Andy Warhol Writers: Theodor Adorno, Alexander Alberro, Rasheed Araeen, Art & Language, Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, T. J. Clark, Mark Cousins, Arthur C. Danto, Jacques Derrida, Thierry de Duve, Fredric Jameson, Christoph Grunenberg, Dave Hickey, Suzanne Perling Hudson, Caroline A. Jones, John Roberts, Elaine Scarry, Wendy Steiner, Paul Wood "Documents of Contemporary Art series Copublished with Whitechapel Art Gallery, London" |

A History of Human Beauty $26.61 A History of Human Beauty treats outstanding physical attractiveness as a quality or possession, comparable to power, intelligence, strength, wealth, education or family, that had a marked effect on history. Beauty in men and women opened opportunities to its possessors not available to the ordinary looking or ugly. While in the past women have had to use the lure of sex to achieve power or wealth, epitomized by royal mistresses or the Grandes Horizontales of the nineteenth century, modern film stars (male and female) can acquire great wealth simply by the use of their images, while attractiveness on television is an essential modern qualification for power. |

Beauty Imagined: A History of the Global Beauty Industry $50.91 The global beauty business permeates our lives, influencing how we perceive ourselves and what it is to be beautiful. The brands and firms which have shaped this industry, such as Avon, Coty, Estee Lauder, L’Oreal, and Shiseido, have imagined beauty for us. This book provides the first authoritative history of the global beauty industry from its emergence in the nineteenth century to the present day, exploring how today’s global giants grew. It shows how successive generations of entrepreneurs built brands which shaped perceptions of beauty, and the business organizations needed to market them. They democratized access to beauty products, once the privilege of elites, but they also defined the gender and ethnic borders of beauty, and its association with a handful of cities, notably Paris and later New York. The result was a homogenization of beauty ideals throughout the world. Today globalization is changing the beauty industry again; its impact can be seen in a range of competing strategies. Global brands have swept into China, Russia, and India, but at the same time, these brands are having to respond to a far greater diversity of cultures and lifestyles as new markets are opened up worldwide. In the twenty first century, beauty is again being re-imagined anew. |

Why Beauty Is Truth: A History of Symmetry $20.94 Hidden in the heart of the theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, string theory, and modern cosmology lies one idea: symmetry. Symmetry has been a key concept for artists, architects, and musicians for centuries, but as a mathematical principle it remained, until very recently, an arcane pursuit. In the twentieth century, however, symmetry emerged as central to the most fundamental ideas in physics and cosmology. "Why Beauty Is Truth" chronicles its history, from ancient Babylon to twenty-first century physics. World-famous mathematician Ian Stewart tells the compelling stories of the eccentric and occasionally tragic mathematical geniuses as he describes how symmetry grew into one of the most important ideas of modern science. |

Why Beauty Is Truth: The History of Symmetry $13.39 At the heart of relativity theory, quantum mechanics, string theory, and much of modern cosmology lies one concept: symmetry. In Why Beauty Is Truth, world-famous mathematician Ian Stewart narrates the history of the emergence of this remarkable area of study. Stewart introduces us to such characters as the Renaissance Italian genius, rogue, scholar, and gambler Girolamo Cardano, who stole the modern method of solving cubic equations and published it in the first important book on algebra, and the young revolutionary Evariste Galois, who refashioned the whole of mathematics and founded the field of group theory only to die in a pointless duel over a woman before his work was published. Stewart also explores the strange numerology of real mathematics, in which particular numbers have unique and unpredictable properties related to symmetry. He shows how Wilhelm Killing discovered “Lie groups" with 14, 52, 78, 133, and 248 dimensions-groups whose very existence is a profound puzzle. Finally, Stewart describes the world beyond superstrings: the “octonionic" symmetries that may explain the very existence of the universe. |

Uncommon Beauty $12.99 “Everywhere we look, it is the “100 Most Beautiful” that are honored and publicized. Inner beauty has taken a back seat to outward appearance. While physical attributes can rarely be altered or modified, inner beauty can be cultivated. Bestselling author Cynthia Heald has chosen seven qualities that make a woman beautiful. In order to make these attributes real and applicable, Cynthia has chosen key women from history, literature, the Bible, and our society to illustrate each quality. These women can be considered “ordinary” women–women with whom other women could readily identify with and who could be easily emulated. For it is her desire that the lives of these women will inspire anyone, no matter how young or old, to say, “I want to develop these qualities in my life–I want to be in the process of becoming a beautiful woman.”" |

Compulsive Beauty $35.42 Surrealism has long been seen as its founder, Andre Breton, wanted it to be seen: as a movement of love and liberation. In "Compulsive Beauty," Foster reads surrealism from its other, darker side: as an art given over to the uncanny, to the compulsion to repeat and the drive toward death. "Compulsive Beauty" not only offers a deconstructive reading of surrealism, long neglected by Anglo-American art history, it also participates in a postmodern reconsideration of modernism, the dominant accounts of which have obscured its involvements in desire and trauma, capitalist shock and technological development. |

California Missions and Presidios: The History & Beauty of the Spanish Missions $28.34 The missions and presidios of California are among the state’s oldest structures and are the most visited historical monuments. These notable buildings are an integral part of California’s history. The state’s recorded history essentially began with the Spanish missions along the ambitious chain of 21 missions on El Camino Real (The Royal Highway) and the men who founded them. "California Missions and Presidios" is a gorgeous book that presents the history of these intriguing sanctuaries of peace and beauty. The eye-popping photography of Alastair Worden and Randy Leffingwell captures their unique character, while Leffingwell’s accessible text brings to life the overall history of California’s conquest by the Spanish; the construction and operation of the missions, presidios, ranchos, and adobes; and the background of the mission architecture and style. Seemingly unchanged, these missions and presidios have survived the centuries remarkably well–still welcoming visitors as a refuge of serenity and splendor while providing a glimpse into the lives of the spirited pioneers who built these structures and lived and worked there. |
