Insulation and Radiant Heat Barriers Work Well Together    by Jeremy Smith

Adequate attic insulation in Katy area homes is one of those objectives of homeowners who are interested in taking steps toward economic savings while at the same time keeping in mind the comfort and safety of their families. Professionally blown-in fiberglass insulation at the recommended peak R-value not only meets these goals, but qualifies the homeowner for Energy Star government program rating tax credits. In combination with a radiant heat barrier, the energy savings are even greater.

The long glorious days of extended summers in Southeast Texas can generate heat in a home’s attic that can simulate that of an oven. This heat is conducted through the roof into the attic and then in turn is transferred into the home’s living spaces unless it is stopped at the source. Radiant heat barriers radiate the heat back toward the roof allowing the fiberglass to more efficiently protect the rooms below from the relocation of heat.

Comfort systems require less maintenance, since they don’t have to work so hard to keep the family cool in summer and warm in winter. The family benefits from even temperatures in every room during all seasons, and outside noise levels are reduced as well.

The porous makeup of fiberglass insulation traps air in tiny pockets, making it easy for condensation to rapidly dissipate. Retention of moisture in some forms of insulation can render it useless and can also create the ideal atmosphere for the growth of mildew and mold. Fiberglass blown-in insulation in Katy homes is a safe method of reducing energy costs. It is fireproof and does not include formaldehyde or chemicals in its manufacture. A better quality of air is maintained throughout the home.

Aluminum foil is lightweight and absorbs very little heat, reflecting the heat away from itself. Radiant heat barriers are manufactured using the concept of reflective aluminum foil to radiate heat away from the walls and roofs of buildings while retarding the buildup of moisture.

Fiberglass insulation has an estimated life span of 30 to 40 years.
